Thankfully loans over here are much more modest. Mine was about £4k/year, and supposedly rising no faster than inflation.

But still I've heard quite convincing arguments about whether or not it makes sense financially to go university.

The introduction of 'top up fees' mean most undergrads here now pay £3k/year. It was only £1k in my day, and the state paid it because I was from a low income background.

In the interest of reporting the facts here, let's get to the real truth of Alan Collinge.
Yes his story is sad, but the guy has not 1, not 2, but 3 degrees. He CHOSE to leave his job to persue other things. He CHOSE to move to Alaska and wash dishes, he CHOSE to ignore his student loans for years and years, and now he wants the company to just let him off the hook. Bankruptcy is not the answer, student loan companies are not evil, and college is still a really good idea for just about everyone out there. What is a horrible idea is going to an expensive school, getting a worthless degree, and taking out 100k in loans to do it.
With all due respect to Mr. Collinge, he had every opportunity in the world to make something of his life. His failure to do so is his own fault. Seems like sour grapes to me.
If you are interested in reading his story, the unedited version as written by him, you can do so at http://americandust.wordpress.com/2007/05/10/new-idiot-to-laugh-atalan-collinge/

The last commenter's motivation is somewhat suspect. If you click on the link and go to his site, which he calls American Dust, you find out that he has basically launched a personal smear attack on Alan Collinge out of nowhere. I gather he's a soccer coach in western Kentucky and a rabid conservative. Nowhere does he reveal his identity so I assume this is a computerized Klannish smear campaign launched from the anonymity of his white-robed computer. His site has been up for about a year and is not very impressive. He seems to have a penchant for calling people idiots and he doesn't like Al Gore or Barack Obama. He specializes in puerile vitriol.

His attack on Mr. Collinge is notable for numerous spelling and grammatical errors, something which you would think he would have corrected in a post in which he calls someone else an idiot such as the following: "Comittee" instead of Committee; "it was ran" instead of it was run; "didnt'" instead of didn't; "He's being charge" instead of he's being charged; "truthfullness" instead of truthfulness; "Collings" instead of Collinge; "leave you job" instead of leave your job; "he never bother reading" instead of he never bothered reading; "defence contracter" instead of defense contractor"; "fullfillment"instead of fulfillment; "exectutives" instead of executives; "theif" instead of thief etc. etc.

Either this guy doesn't know how to spell and basic English grammar or he doesn't know enough to run his diatribe through the spell and grammar checker. I ask you who's the idiot here? The guy claims to know Mr. Collinge's story which he claims to have gotten online but nowhere does he link to it which would have been the honest thing to do. Instead he accuses Mr. Collinge of dishonesty. American Dusts' lack of integrity sinks to new lows. He claims that at his website you will find "the unedited version as written by him [of Mr. Collinge's story]", but instead all you find is American Dust's smear campaign.

I have researched Mr. Collinge's story and American Dust's version is a falsification. It does not bear scrutiny and is just a jumble of mindless accusations, the intent of which is to discourage and disparage Mr. Collinge who has done yeoman duty in exposing the malpractices of the student loan industry.

American Dust seems to be a Republican attack dog in training but he doesn't rise to the heights (or sink to the depths depending on your point of view) of a Lee Atwater or a Karl Rove. Maybe he is also a paid lobbyist (he wishes) working for Al Lord.

At any rate this is a meritless, baseless attack which just seeks to demean, disparage, cast aspersions on and castigate Mr. Collinge's character while ignoring the predatory practices of an industry that just seeks to make money on the backs of peoples' misery.

I cant imagine such an evil organization, the nerve of expecting borrowers to actually pay back what they have borrowed with interest.
What is this world coming to?
Never mind that the punk never would have had the chance to go to college without them.

For many students, student credits are sought at the start of their college career. Most students do work in a part-time job; however, this is not always enough to cover the many expenses of college. With student credits, the student can keep their attention on things such as studies and classes, without having to worry about many expenses. The great thing about student credits is that for the entire time you are in college full-time, the loan will not need to be repaid until you have finished college for good and graduated in your degree.

I got my 2008 Income Tax return (Federal) be taken away from me by Sallie Mae. Really pissed me off. At first, I did think that would need to pay it off, until I found out Sallie Mae is government sponsored. Now, I did not finish with the school and no college degree. Should I still have to pay it back?

Tom

"In Sweden, for example, they have a national job data bank. They will hook you up with a job you're qualified for anywhere in the country. "

Do they speak good English there and would they be willing to import janitors? What is the site of the national job data bank?

Doug Ramsey: Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond
This is a great book! Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck formed the heart of one of the best all time jazz groups. Paul was the quintessential intellectual, white jazz musician. A talented writer, he never published anything. However author, Doug Ramsey has collected Paul's letters here. How ironic that now his writing in the form of letters to his father and ex-wife, among others, is finally published showing another window on the mind of this talented person. A sideman, for the most part, his entire life, the Dave Brubeck Quartet might never have happened at all due to the fact that Paul had managed to offend Dave to the point where he never wanted to see him again. It had to do with a gig that Paul actually was the leader of. Paul wanted to take the summer off to play another gig, and Dave wanted Paul to let him take over the gig at the Band Box in Palo Alto, CA. Paul wouldn't let him and Dave, married with two children, proceeded to starve. Due to an elaborate publicity campaign, when he realized the error of his ways, Paul managed to worm himself back into Dave's good graces. The rest is history. This book is remarkable for the insight it gives into a working jazz musician's mind, wonderful pictures and interviews with the significant figures in Paul's life. Author Ramsey, not a remarkable penman himself, has nevertheless done a magnificent job of assembling all these various materials. Unlike a lot of jazz authors, he doesn't overly idolize his subject with the result that you get the feeling that you have met a real person and not a idealized version. That's high praise indeed for any biographer. (*****)
